The 20 best albums of all time

Yahoo homepage had a article this morning on the 20 best albums of all time, and I'll have to admit that I agree with very few of them. Of course, he based a lot of it on sales and long-term popularity - but still - some of them are awful. Tell me what you think:

#20: Faith - George Michael
(I wholeheartedly do NOT agree with this. There are a couple of good songs, but overall its not good).

#19: Appetite for Destruction - Guns N' Roses
(This is actually one of my favorite albums from the 80s. I love me hair-band rock. I may actually agree with this one.)

#18: Purple Rain - Prince
(I actually liked this album "back in the day", but its been so long since I listened to it, that I don't know if I have an opinion.)

#17: Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
(No comment on this one - the only Led Zeppelin song I even know is Stairway to Heaven. I've heard others, but they all song so much alike that I've never "gotten it".)

#16: Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen
(Seriously? This one puzzles me)

#15: Nevermind - Nirvana
(One of the best albums ever. Besides being great music, there is so much nostalgia for me. It just takes me back to freshman year of college - one of the best times of my life. I also recently read that that baby on the cover is now a teenager. Makes me feel old.)

#14: Van Halen - Van Halen
(Despite my love of 80s hair bands, I don't know this album either)

#13: Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
(I can say I like some of these songs, but I was only 3 when the album came out, so I think I missed it.)

#12: The Wall - Pink Floyd
(Although I listened to this album with friends to "be cool" - its not one of my favs.)

#11: The Joshua Tree - U2
(I'm not the biggest U2 fan, but I will admit to loving this album)

#10: Metallica - Metallica
(Ok - maybe I don't like 80s hair bands as much as I thought. Not my fav either)

#9: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
(See my previous Led Zeppelin comment)

#8: Hotel California - Eagles
(LOVE me some Eagles!)

#7: The White Album - The Beatles
(Never got the Beatles either. Definitely not my favorite)

#6: Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
(Seriously - there are other bands. Enough with Led Zeppelin)

#5: Abbey Road - The Beatles
(See comment to #7)

#4: Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin
(I decline to comment)

#3: Thriller - Michael Jackson
(LOVE this album. I think I wore the lines off of the record. And I think I could still sing the words to every single song. Although I'm no longer an MJ fan, this album was a key part of my childhood.)

#2: Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
(Was this the album that goes with The Wizard of OZ?)

#1: Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder
(Ewwww - that formula is flawed. Stevie is NOT the best ever)

Overall, I do not agree with this list. Maybe I should come up with a short list of my own (notice none of them are new - guess I've grown up):

Del Amitri - Twisted
(I know this band is a little obscure, but they're really good)

Toad the Wet Sprocket - Fear or Dulcinea
(I can't decide which album is better. I like every single song on both albums.)

REM - Green
(The soundtrack to my teenage years)

Indigo Girls - Rites of Passage
(Every single song on this album is great. It has been known to be left in my CD player for weeks on end.)

Dave Mathews Band - Crash
(Seriously. Good. Music.)

Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind
(I think this is the only album they ever did, but its really good. Check it out sometime.)

Live - Throwing Copper
(I could listen all day long)

Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
(In high school, my best friend had this tape in her car constantly. I went out and bought the CD - it was the first one I ever actually bought - and I'm so glad I did. Every song is brilliant. Tori never quite did it again sadly.)

Sarah McLaughlin - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
(Another one that I could listen to over and over and over again and never get tired of. Every single song. Definitely my favorite album of all time)

Now I'm off to pop in one of my old CDs.

So true. The thing about those lists is that musical taste is SO individual - they're never going to represent what most people really think. Seriously - Led Zeppelin is on there twice?? I have to disagree with you about the Beatles though.

I love your list - you can tell we both grew up in the same era. :D

Oh Abbey Road and the White Album you don't get? Love, love both of those. Abbey Road is prob my fav of all Beatle albums.

Nirvana...I realize they put their mark and change on music forever, but I guess I'm just bored of them.

I didn't realize the love I had for G and R until recently, but have to admit I love Axel, drama queenish and all.

Always have liked Fleetwood Mac and Pink.

HATE u2 with the fire of a thousand suns. I don't know why actually, but i just like to hate things, so there you go.

I can't say i'm a big Tori Amos or Sarah fan, but I do like Throwing Copper from Live and Toad the Wet. I saw Toad my freshman year of college. Great fun. I think I like too many we-have-no-talent-but-we-are-popular bands. Ellie has me hooked on Miley Cyrus Breakout right now. I'm so embarrassed.

Some of the top 20, I totally understand...and then there's George Michael. What were they thinking?

OK....You're going to laugh, but I loved that George Michael Faith album. I think I listened to that over and over and over again way back when. I love George Michael. Call me crazy, but I do. (his music...) It's totally out of my "music character" (ha ha) but I loved the Guns 'n Roses one, too. Fleetwood Mac Rumours is another one of my very, very favorites. My parents listened to it....so I can recite every word to every song. I think I even have a song from that album on my playlist. ha ha I love the Eagles, too....and the Beatles. As for your list.... I agree with them all, pretty much. That Third Eye Blind CD is STILL in my car. I put it in the other day....and we were laughing at how many times they talked about meth on that CD. Oh well, it is good. :o) I love Toad the Wet Sprocket and REM, too. I loved reading your post, as USUAL. Sorry for the long comment.

Haha! I forgot about the Pink Floyd/DSOTM album and Wizard of Oz. Too funny.
I definitely like your list better. I love Live & Indigo Girls, reminds me of college :)
Do you like Dance Hall Crashers? I bet you would.

That is so funny, because I agree with like 90% of that top twenty. Then again I am a sucker for classic rock, like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, and Van Halen. I also adore the beatles, so that list makes me pretty happy. I am not a huge Stevie Wonder fan, but I must admit I know a few songs. I love your list too. Tori Amos really did the best with Little Earthquakes, and anything Sarah is amazing! I must say that it is a good thing I like Metallica, because my husband adores them!

Oh I like your list MUCH better! Reading some of those titles sure gave me a little nostalgia too. All the grunge stuff was when I was in my high school years - so memorable...

Christie, we have almost the same taste in music. Nirvana- totally nostalgic, Live- one of my faves ever. Sarah Mclachlan- seen her 2 times in concert, Love the Eagles, Love Toad, Tori Amos is one of my very faves, much to the chagrin of my husband who can't stand her.

Good list! Makes me want to break out some old school music!

That was interesting to read the top albums. I was surprised by some of them too. This list brought back alot of memories. Especially the big hair bands. Sometimes when I listen to the 80's music, I think...where has all the good music gone. And other times I think...what were we thinking???

I don't get those lists either (Fleetwood Mac? Stevie Nicks...no thanks). There's only a few I even like on their list. Led Zeppelin is great, but it doesn't deserve three spots in the list (my favorite Zeppelin songs are "Kashmir", then "Immigrant Song", but I really don't like Stairway.). I also think the Beatles are overrated - they're good, but overrated. My husband has made me a Pink Floyd fan - I don't like them nearly as much as he does, but once you kinda get what the Wall is all about (its overriding theme), it's pretty interesting. And I love DSOTM - each song is about something that can drive a person crazy. Pretty interesting. And it is weird how it does go exactly with Wizard of Oz...

As for your list, I totally agree with Sarah McLachlan, though I like her "Surfacing" album best. And Dave Matthews "Crash" instantly puts me back in high school. Love it! Anyway, fun post!

Christie, I like your list way better than theirs. I do like Faith, love George Michael and Wham, but I’m not sure if I’d say it’s in my top 20. But certainly in my top 50. Purple Rain, yes. Like you, not into the Beatles. I do like a lot of Led Zepplin songs, but I’d say a Greatest Hits album deserves to be in the top 20, not 3 different albums. I’m not familiar with that Guns N Roses album, Van Halen album, Fleetwood Mac album or Metallica album, but they all have good songs, so I really can’t argue with those. I despise Bruce Springstein so he would never be on any list I compiled. Pink Floyd the wall, yes. Michael Jackson, absolutely, Eagles, definitely. As for the rest, I don’t have a say one way or the other. But YOUR list, I agree with almost all of them. Absolutely Tori Amos (Under the Pink is just as good, I think) and Sarah McLachlan and Toad the Wet Sprocket (I’d vote for Fear), and several Indigo Girls albums. Good choices!a
